My partner and I were scooting around on our motorbike around Hoan Kiem Lake in the Hanoi Old Quarter last weekend when we spotted a man with two mesh bags on the back of his motorbike. Inside one, there was a lizard, in the other there were maybe thirty or so scorpions crawling around. Live scorpions for sale!

(This is a Thailand Scorpion, so it may be somewhat different, but it looked very similar to the ones in the bag, and the only picture I could find on the interweb of scorpions that looked like the ones we saw)

So we pulled up to see him pass again, but he was kind enough to pull up next to us so we could have a good look and gawk at his wares. He obviously wanted us to purchase some, but, to be completely honest, I would not have the slightest idea how to prepare scorpion. Even if they will make my ‘husband’ (read: boyfriend) strong and healthy! Sorry, hon, you will have to go elsewhere to find a scorpion dish to make you stronger!

No sale, but a nice moment of wonder in a city that has become so much like home now that I don’t even flinch at most wares peddled on the street. It was quite a spectacle with the locals, too, they gathered around to look at the creepy crawlies as well.Everyone likes a good shudder sometimes.

Well, for next time, here’s a link to my favourite scorpion soup.
